Corporate Design, Inc. is a continuation of a furniture company established in Evansville, Indiana in the year 1919. The original firm, Universal Furniture Co., was founded by Mr. A.E. Small, Sr. (1882-1943) Universal Furniture was a highly successful wholesale furniture company servicing the states of Indiana, Illinois, Kentucky, Tennessee, and Missouri. |
The business was taken over by Mr. A.E. "Ed" Small in the early 1950’s. Upon Ed’s decision to retire, his son J. Michael "Mike" Small, purchased the stock and assets of Universal Furniture’s contract division. Mike had been directing the contract division for seven years and upon acquiring it in 1983, established Corporate Design, Inc. |
In 1985 Mike moved Corporate Design into a new corporate office space within a portion of Universal Furniture’s original home. The offices have been proudly restored to their original 1860’s structure combined with contemporary furnishings to provide a pleasant showroom atmosphere. In the same year Corporate Design acquired the Steelcase rights for Kentucky from a competitor and also added the Office Furniture USA division. OF/USA is positioned to target the “mid-market” segment of the office furniture industry appealing primarily to “medium-sized” businesses. OF/USA is a nationwide collaboration between the top manufacturers and dealers of office furniture in North America. |
